The New Sat Math is developed by Goldhil Educational and runs approximately two hours. However, it will take longer to get the full benefit of the SAT Review. It is organized in four sections with practice problems, answers, and tips.
The four sections are Introduction to SAT Math, Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry. I compared the DVD contents to the College Board SAT site and book, and I was happy with the coverage of the topics compared to the book. However, the Arithmetic and Algebra sections were more thorough than the Geometry section. The Geometry topics that were covered were done well and would still benefit the student. Each section included a review and practice problems. It will be necessary to pause the video to work each problem. The answers immediately follow the problems.
The most valuable part of the SAT Math video besides how to work the problems is the tips and test strategies. For instance, the answers are explained along with why other answers are wrong. This is not done for all, but in the case where common errors occur. They referred to them as “traps.” There were many possible traps discussed throughout the mini lessons too. In addition, test strategies such as to guess or not to guess, what problems to spend most of your time on, and insights on how the questions are arranged make this DVD worth your time and money. If you’re looking for heavy practice on SAT problems, this isn’t it. Instead, it teaches and reviews the concepts needed for success including how to approach Algebra word problems without actually doing the Algebra.
Although more practice with a full SAT practice Math test should be included in your preparation, I think the New SAT Math DVD is a good resource and reference to help prepare students for the math section of the SAT.
It can be purchased separately or save a few dollars and get the DVD set which includes the New SAT Critical Reading and Writing DVD.
