Building a Greenhouse

It is possible to garden year-round when you have a greenhouse or conservatory. These are much more popular in Europe than in the U.S. Only one per-cent of American gardening households has a greenhouse while in Europe it is 60%. However, hoop houses or high tunnel greenhouses are becoming popular among American vegetable growers.

A greenhouse doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It can be a small window inset on the sunny side of the house. So far as styles are concerned, a lean-to is cheaper. This type requires less heat if one side is placed against the house.

There are greenhouses in every price range. It all depends upon your budget
and the materials you choose.

Storey Publishing has released a definitive guide to greenhouses. “How to Build Your Own Greenhouse-Designs and Plans to Meet Your Growing Needs” is by Roger Marshall. This is illustrated with color photos and line art. It covers the history of greenhouses from the very first orangeries down to the present.

All in all, this comprehensive guide has nine complete greenhouse plans. The least expensive styles include the hoop house and the window inset. There is also an economical garden shed combination and a lean-to. This title also features plans for free standing greenhouses as well.

For each of the nine greenhouse plans, this has drawings and illustrated, easy to follow, step by step instructions from start to finish. This also has complete lists of the materials you’ll need.

This title will help you decide whether a greenhouse kit is the right way to go or whether you need to start from scratch.

This guide takes you through every step of the process starting with an evaluation of your needs and budget. This covers the complete planning and building process. The author begins with basic questions you need to consider, such as determining the proper size greenhouse for your needs.

This title will help you choose the right kind of greenhouse for your needs and the best building materials for your situation. The author also addresses all of the practical aspects, such as providing ventilation, lighting, heating, and water.

An entire chapter is devoted to the greenhouse covering, which is called glazing. The author also explains how to plan and install the foundation and flooring for the greenhouse. This in-depth guide also addresses the interior furnishings of greenhouses, such as benches, shelves, and growing beds.

In addition, the author provides a seasonal look at the care and maintenance of greenhouses and routine greenhouse chores.
