Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis, South Dakota is a small town with approximately 6,700 residents that opens their hearts and doors for an increase in population that is nearly double the entire state. What began as “The Black Hills Classic” one day motorcycle race in 1938, with only nine participants and handful of spectators, has blossomed into a seven day event with over 700,000 people in attendance in the year 2000.

Vendors displaying every biker item available have topped over 900 in number in past years. There is always great entertainment, races, bike shows, parties, friendship, and the excitement of seeing Main Street decked out in motorcycles, motorcycles, and more motorcycles. The glare from the chrome warrants extra sunscreen and polarized sunglasses. They even have shuttles to take you from your hotel to Main Street if you want to drink and party hard without the worry of navigating your bike amongst the thousands that are already there. The trip to Sturgis from your home may be one day or one week, but it is still an adventure. There are patches available that say, “I Rode Mine to Sturgis” and are worn like a badge of honor.

In 2009, the rally will be held August 3rd through the 9th. This year, Main Street is allowing riders to purchase a brick to be placed on Main Street with your name on it. The cost per brick is $75.00 each and granite pacers at $500 each. The order deadline is March 15, 2009, so if you want to be immortalized in Sturgis, click on the link below entitled Sturgis Rally. The riding roads are unbelievable and the scenery is fantastic. There are many local attractions, including Mount Rushmore and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame to keep you occupied.

One key thing to remember is to “book early” because many past year attendees come back year after year and have a standing reservation. There are many types of lodging accomodations to fit every budget. The ultimate in riding destinations, attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will give you memories that last a lifetime.

Live your dream.
