Have you ever wanted to send a message in a bottle? We've all read stories of a kid dropping a bottle into a river or ocean with a name and address only to have the bottle be found years later on the other side of the world.
Young, old or middle aged alike, people still have a fascination with how far something they "set free" and send out into the world will travel.
While you may not be able to or even want to send a message in a bottle, you can still set something we all use free and be informed of where it lands through WheresGeorge.com.
Where's George tracks where your dollar bill (George) travels after you set it free. Now you can set any denomination free, but dollars are the most common. The first step is to enter the serial number of the bill into the WheresGeorge database, mark the bill so people know where to log it's progress and spend it.
I recently received a bill marked with a rubber stamp, "See where I've been track where I go next www.wheresgeorge.com." Registration was not required to see where my bill had been or to note it's progress. I could see that it had travel about 62 miles since being "set free" last year and that the last location entry had been 232 days 9 hours and 6 minutes before.
Registration provides additional abilities to track both the money you send out and find. You can set-up automatic email notifications and anonymously contact others who have noted the progress of your bill.
After I registered I went back and claimed my bill through the "lost and found" link. So now I will be updated on any future entries. My account also allowed me to run a zip code report. When I typed my zip code into the search I discovered that over 11,000 bills had passed through my town. Some had traveled to Military Bases in Italy and Germany.
There are currently over 1.5 million WheresGeorge bills drifting around in the world, with more being added every day. The site is 100% free and doesn't serve a purpose other than to be entertaining and fun.
There are tracking sites for many other currencies, below are additional fun sites to track funds world wide.
