Sins of the Flesh
This time out, I have the latest from Caridad Pineiro, Sins of the Flesh (Grand Central). If you've read and enjoyed her 'Calling' series, I really think you'll want to check this one out. Cellist Caterina Shaw has a brain tumor that is stealing her music, and now her only hope is to undergo an experimental treatment at a private clinic. Things go from bad to worse then. Mick Carrera has been hired by the clinic to hunt Caterina down after one of the doctors is brutally murdered, and the clinic claims it was Caterina. But Mick finds that extremely hard to believe once he has found her. Even more astonishing are the things she can do physically. Under normal circumstances, Mick has no problem keeping his personal opinions out of his work, but in this case, he can't believe that Cat is capable of the viciousness of the murder she's been accused of. So he takes her into hiding until he can discover just what did happen that night. Only the clinic hasn't just hired him; they've hired others as well, which makes Mick wonder even more exactly what it is they're so desperate to hide. Cat's memory comes back to her a little at a time, but she knows she didn't kill anyone. But even as she regains her memories of what happened at the clinic, her body is still reacting to the things that were done to her there, and if Mick can't get her help in time, she could still die. Neither of them knows just what they're dealing with, or the lengths to which these people will go, but they do know their deepening feelings for one another can only help them reach their goals. Mick is an interesting hero, a mercenary for hire, but a family man on his own time. Caterina is strong-willed, and now forced to deal with something she never imagined, she'll grow even stronger. This is a terrific paranormal story for readers who're tired of the same old, same old, with an interesting new idea. The only bad thing here is that the publisher is making us wait till next fall for the second story in the series. I'm giving this one four of Cupid's five arrows.
Until next time, happy reading!
