Review of a Periodical

War for water is an annual issue in the Himalayan-Hindukush mountain range area and some other Asian countries. Many agricultural farms in this region are water-stressed. International Center for integrated mountain development has published a periodical titled "Water Storage, A strategy for climate change adaptation in the Himalayas". In the winter issue of ICIMOD water storage has been suggested as a key strategy for this kind of adaptation in the mentioned region.

Water is a major issue in many Asian countries. During summer the need of water for agriculture, hydroelectricity, domestic use and industrial use rises at the high level as the ground water level decreases. At that time a huge gap between demand and availability of water arise. To solve this problem researchers and scientists have suggested storing water in high altitude. But the implementation of his theory is not so easy. In the words of Andreas Schild, Director General of ICIMOD, "What sounds simple in theory proves complicated and challenging in practice." The researchers are pointing at the glacier lakes and the high altitude wetlands to use as potential water storage. Other than the two polar regions the third region that is covered by snow and glacier is the Himalayan-Hindukush region. Some glaciers are already melted because of global warming.

In this periodical, the present condition of water storage of Himalayan-Hindukush region, the role of water storage in adaptation to climate change in this region, knowledge gaps and priorities in adaptation and some other issues related to this topic were discussed.

The main drawback of this issue is absence of discussion of dams and its impact. Dams play a great role in this region to create water stress, mainly in agricultural farms. This important issue has been left behind in this periodical.

However, the work and research that are going on in this mountain region are remarkable. Any work that helps the irrigation process easier means a lot to those farmers who are challenged by seasonal scarcity of water.
