Coffee Beer

Coffee Beer
I got my first hint of the coffee-beer union while reading my regular “Coffee & Tea Newsletter” this week. In spite of all of my coffee experiences, this one really took me by surprise.

Beer and coffee are probably the most popular drinks in the world. In fact, according to the US Department of the Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, in the last year alone, 165,033,893 bottles and cans of beer were produced.[1]

Another article about beer says, “...intentionally fermented beverages existed at least as early as the Neolithic period (cir. 10,000 B.C.)…, and it has been suggested that beer may have preceded bread as a staple…” [2]

Beer preceded bread? You mean we drank even before we ate?

With all of this coffee and beer drinking going on since the beginning of time, I am surprised someone didn’t think of combining them sooner. Well maybe they did.

What exactly is beer?

Beer, according to MerriamWebster.com, is “an alcoholic beverage usually made from malted cereal grain (as barley), flavored with hops, and brewed by slow fermentation.”

Sounds like breakfast to me and what goes great with breakfast? Why coffee of course.

Coffee’s Discovery

Coffee also has its own interesting arrival. The story of coffee began, so it is said, with a goat herder who noticed that his goats were acting a bit more animated after eating the fruit of a coffee tree. This happened in an Ethiopian province called Kaffa, hence the evolvement of the name coffee.

With so much in common like their complex processes, flavors, and ancient beginnings, combining these two seems like a natural.
