Pittsburgh Restaurants for Travel with Kids

Pittsburgh Restaurants for Travel with Kids
Pittsburgh, PA, may not be known much for its food beyond its being the home base for Heinz Ketchup, but there are plenty of great places to eat there while you are on travel. While Pittsburgh is a haven for connoisseurs of breweries and pub grub, there are also several hidden hot spots that accommodate travelers for children as well. Here are a few of the best to try. These restaurants score high points for serving delicious foods that many children love.

Pamela’s Diner
A favorite of President Barack Obama’s, P &G’s Pamela’s Diner is well known for its crepe-style pancakes. This cash-only diner also serves lunch and dinner, but people rave about the pancakes. Opt for these instead of regular diner fare. For the best service and eating experience, visit Pamela’s during the week and leave the long lines and slower weekend service to less savvy travelers. Pamela’s has several locations around the Pittsburgh area, so it is also ultra convenient for travelers at various hotels all over Pittsburth.

Franktuary
Some kids wouldn’t eat much more than burgers, fries, pizza, and hot dogs if the adults in their lives didn’t encourage them to do otherwise. But if you’re traveling, and you just want your kids to have fun, Franktuary might be a great place to go for a good hot dog. Both you and the kids will be pleased. Adults may want to try culinary hot dog flavors like the Pittsburgh or El Greco while picky-eater kids can stick with mustard and ketchup (Heinz, of course!). When you go, don’t let the location fool you. It may be housed in the basement of a church, but the hot dogs here are superb. Try the grass-fed beef hot dogs if you are socially conscious.

Uncle Sam’s Submarines
Put together good bread and a few slices of your favorite meats, and you’ll get a delicious sandwich. Yet there’s something about Uncle Sam’s that makes its sandwiches more than just good. Great choices to try are the cheesesteak (rivaled with the cheesesteak from its cousin city Philadelphia just a few miles away), the chicken cheesesteak, and sweet potato fries.

Quaker Steak and Lube
While Quaker Steak and Lube does serve steak, this place is not so much a steak house as it is a house of great wings. At Quaker Steak and Lube, you can get a bucket of wings that provides a great serving for a family traveling as a group. Quaker also offers smaller portions as well. To avoid rowdier crowds, visit Quaker on days when big games like the Final Four, or Monday night football, etc. aren’t on the screen. Wings are a great finger food, so it isn’t any wonder that groups of all kinds flock to this place.

Mattress Factory Café
Part of the Mattress Factory Contemporary Art Museum, the café by the same name is an excellent place to stop before or after a visit to the main attraction. The fare here is NOT for picky eaters, but if you are traveling with older children with adventurous palettes, the café may be just the place for you and your kids because of its location. And food well done is, after all, an art, too.

Steel City Rib House
With a cafeteria-style atmosphere, Steel City Rib House is a fine casual experience for kids, and it has all the delicious ribs and home-style foods that draw in hearty-eating adults. It accompanies ribs with soulful fare like collard greens and corn bread, and the taste is divine.
