College Rivalry Week 2010

Guest Author - Mona McKenzie

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends and foes. All across the country, high school and college rivalry games will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Some of the most anticipated college games with conference championship or BCS implications and plain ol’ bragging rights will be played this weekend:

“Iron Bowl” Auburn (11-0) vs. Alabama (9-2)
One of the most talked about games will feature National Champion and currently 11th ranked Alabama taking on Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Newton and the second ranked Auburn Tigers. Some of the fervor behind the “Pay for Play” allegations against Newton and his father has thankfully died down. The Crimson Tide is looking to stop the Tigers from advancing to the SEC Championship game and possibly the National Championship Game.

“The Game” Michigan (7-4) vs Ohio State (10-1)
Will Rich Rod’s team continue their turnaround and create havoc for the Buckeyes, and save his job? Quarterbacks Denard Robinson and Terrelle Pryor battle it out as Ohio State attempts to secure their spot in the Rose Bowl.

“Backyard Brawl” West Virginia (7-3) vs. Pitt (6-4)
These bitter rivals meet for the 103rd time since 1895. Pitt is in the drivers seat to capture the Big East title for a likely trip to the BCS Fiesta Bowl with wins against the Mountaineers and Cincinnati next week. West Virginia can play spoiler with a win today and next week, along with two losses by Connecticut to possibly win the Big East.

Florida (7-4) vs Florida State (8-3)
The Seminoles are on top of the ACC Atlantic Division standings and control their own destiny to the ACC Championship. Florida is bowl-eligible and can pad their record with a win against their in-state rival.

Oklahoma (9-2) vs. Oklahoma State (10-1) The Cowboys are one game ahead of the Sooners in the Big 12 South Division. The winner of this game will likely appear in the Big 12 championship game. This should be a great match-up.

South Carolina (8-3) vs. Clemson (6-5)
The Gamecocks have already clinched the SEC East Division. Clemson looks to catch their in-state rival looking ahead to the SEC Championship game to upset the Gamecocks.

Mississippi State (7-4) vs. Mississippi (4-7)
Both of these teams had relatively disappointing seasons, but, don’t look to let their interstate rival walk away with a win.

Whether your team is playing a rival or not, enjoy all the food and festivities and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
