Physical Fitness and Your Hair
Aerobics, Tread Mill, Bike, or Elliptical Trainer:
We often pull long hair back tightly with an elasticized band or hair clip to alleviate the irritation of flyaway hair. The constant rhythmic motion of these activities causes each hair to be in constant motion. The area where your hair is secured with the band is in danger. The motion causes friction that will eventually wear away the protective layer of the hair, causing fraying, splitting and breaking.
Reduce the stress on your hair by securing it loosely with a soft scrunchy or a headband.
Outside Walking, Running or Biking:
The same hazard applies here as above, but there are additional concerns. Wind and sun will take a toll on hair that is left to fly in the breeze. The wind can cause split ends and the sun causes dryness and bleaching. When possible, wear a cap and always use sun protection for your hair. Many products give some leval of UV protection. Read the labels.
Swimming pool or hot tub:
We all know that chlorine is harmful to your hair, affecting the color as well as the overall condition. As soon as you are out of the water, shampoo thoroughly to remove all traces of the chemical. It is always wise to follow with a good conditioner. Treat yourself and pamper your hair by spending time in the sauna before rinsing the conditioner out. You will soften your hair while you soothe tired muscles.
One last caution:
Weight loss plans including radical dieting are popular. Remember that your body needs good nutrition to produce hair that is healthy, shiny and strong.
Avoid ‘fad’ diets and check with your doctor or nutritionist to be sure you are including the recommended daily allowance of vitamins.
So stay healthy and diligently follow your fitness plan, but remember to protect your hair. When you reach your physical fitness goal, you will have beautiful, healthy hair to go with your great body.
