Gentle Attachment Parenting Advocacy
Attachment parenting, done well, is the very soul of activism. Nothing can change the world more completely than children raised to be bright, engaged and caring. This is why we cosleep, breastfeed, cloth diaper and wear our babies. Through these small and seemingly simple acts we nourish the hearts as well as the bodies of our children. At times you may want to spread the word to others who are involved in raising children so they too can deepen the bond with their children. You may not feel like an advocate, but your example changes lives.
Being a gentle voice or reason and an advocate for for attachment parenting will impact your own children and the world they grow in, as well as the lives of those you touch. Activism is not limited to rallies and big events. In fact, the most profound activism you ever participate in will likely be on a grassroots level. Gentle advocacy can have a ripple effect that will touch an untold number of families.
In addition to your living example of well-behaved, securely attached, healthy children, you may wish to try some other ways to gently share the benefits of attachment parenting.
* Give attachment parenting books to expectant and new moms. They are inundated with "cry it out" sleep books and formula ad driven magazines. A great place to start is Dr. Sear's Attachment Parenting
* Consider giving a well made sling or wrap as a shower gift. You'll get to show it off to everyone there (bonus advocacy!) and the new parents will thank you when they realize slings reduce crying! You'll find a variety of slings here.
* Cloth diaper gift sets are a great way to introduce new parents to the cuteness and easy of use of modern cloth diapers. Even if they think they won't use them, running out of diapers at 2 AM or dealing with a persistent diaper rash will convince them to give cloth a try. You can even get cloth diaper cakes. Cute pocket diaper sets or colored prefolds are great place to start. Colored prefolds can double as burp cloths for those who don't use cloth at all.
* Share your experiences. When a new parent complains of exhaustion, gently offer some of your own experiences. I know one exhausted mother whose baby was 8 months old before she figured out that she could breastfeed lying down! Even a few non-threatening anecdotes can make all the difference for a new parent. "I understand. I was a wreck after Josh came, but it was so much easier once we figured out that we all got more sleep if he was in our bed."
* Pick up a few cute t-shirts, bumper stickers, tote bags or mugs that will make people smile even while they unconsciously absorb your message.
