FREE Ragnarok MMORPG Download

Guest Author - Lisa Shea

Talk about the PERFECT week for MMORPG lovers!! Not only is Planetside in free trial, but so is Ragnarok, an anime-style RPG with great graphics!

You start out by creating a user profile, including your gender. Note that you can only make characters of your own gender once in the game. You can customize your character's hair style and color, but nothing else. Clothes can be bought in-game and will update your look, so that's not too bad. You can also customize your base stats like in most MMORPGs - strength, intelligence, etc.

There's a brief lecture-style tutorial in the game to get you familiar with the controls. You start out with a dagger, your clothes, and 200 "Zeny" (monetary units) when you're done with training. Then it's out into the world!

The graphics are very nicely done in an anime style. The trees with their five-pointed leaves are gorgeous, the shadows falling across the landscape. The characters are almost like 2-D anime creations moving through this world. It's perhaps an interesting blend of Dark Cloud 2 with Paper Mario.

Each character has a 'talk bubble' over his or her head, so you can choose which one you want to get more info about. There are also fully fledged chat windows for more in-depth conversations. Other interfaces work well too, from attack to inventory and so on. Enough MMORPGs exist nowadays that these sorts of issues have been worked and tweaked quite well.

You fight and gain experience, gaining game-world abilities (like creating parties) pretty quickly. Once you reach level 9 you can begin to specialize. There are the basic classes of swordsman, archer, mage, etc. You have to pass a test in a given area of the world to join that group. You begin to develop skills in that area. Reach level 40 and now you're in an elite area of that class, and can choose a sub-specialty such as hunter or assassin.

The system encourages teamwork and party play, and has classes that are support-style for those who want to be a healing cleric, a merchant, a tradesman or more.

Highly recommended for anime fans who want to enter a MMORPG that reflects their passion!
