April 19 2009 Large & Lovely Newsletter

Hello Large and Lovelies,

Another week gone, another degree or two or three warmer. I did three hours of yard work on Friday and am still paying for it. I'm only upset because I can't physically go out and do more. I know, whine, whine. This too shall pass (the pain I mean, not the whining).

Dog seems to have recovered from having her oral tumor removal last month. She has some kind of crazy spring fever going on. She's nine going on two.

If you have a chance tomorrow tune into CNN to see Kate Harding on "American Morning" talking about United Airlines "Fatties Pay More Policy" (supposedly around 8:20 am EST).

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Fat Quote

"The reason it is "somehow less noticeable" to you that there are no fat women onscreen is that the entire history of cinema is designed to reassure you that you don’t have to look at fat women. Thin women are the default; they are how the cinematic world is populated, so they look normal to your eyes. You don’t notice the absence of fat women; you notice their rare presence, when the camera deviates from your point of view long enough for you to say "Whoa, fattie!" But every single woman who sits in a movie theater is forced to inhabit that male gaze, too, forced to watch how the camera treats women of rare beauty and slenderness as the only kind of women who exist. This is how it is possible for women as small as Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Simpson to be "Hollywood fat." From SweetMachine at (Kate Harding's Shapely Prose)
