Here is an item which can really only be made with the needle (I´m sure someone somewhere will tell me it can be done with the shuttle - do tell). A most effective piece, you could easily substitute other beads if you can´t get the butterflies used in the pattern.

This unusual design by Birgit Phelps is in fact a very old technique. Using five shuttles is slow and fiddly but do give it a try. Some interesting effects can be achieved with pearl tatting which has not yet been fully developed.
