News - History

Ships have been around since the very earliest days of man. How did cruising come around to become so popular?

Immigration Act 1924 and Cruising star
Up until 1921-1924, most cruise ships were about immigrants coming to the United States. In 1924, the US closed up its doors - and cruise ships changed forever.

Jamestown Colonist Ships star
The first settler ships to come to the US were the three ships to settle Jamestown Virginia in 1607. These were the Discovery, Godspeed and Susan Constant.

Lusitania - Cruise Ship History 1907 star
In the early 1900s, cruise ships were either dirty immigrant torture devices, or incredibly elegant travel for rich people. The Lusitania fell soundly into category 2.

Samuel Cunard - First Atlantic Cruises star
Until Samuel Cunard came along, ships to the US were one-off runs to carry certain groups of people. In 1839, Samual Cunard set up a regular run to bring people and mail back and forth.
