Shelaby's Fez Documentary Project

Shelaby's Fez Documentary Project
On July 14, 2013, dancers and musicians will come together to celebrate the legendary Fez nightclub in Los Angeles, California. Roxanne Shelaby, daughter of founder Lou Shelaby, is raising funds for this wonderful documentary.

For those that may not know, the Fez was the first of its kind to feature Middle Eastern music and dance. The nightclub opened up in the late '50s, in operation until 1969. Lou Shelaby closed the Fez and opened up another nightclub called Cascades.

Ever since Roxanne mentioned that she was going to do a documentary about the Fez, stories have been pouring in from all over. Dancers who remember their first performance recall that moment. Others recall their first moment seeing a show and being inspired to dance. Those dancers would eventually make their debut at the Fez.

Musicians made contact with Roxanne. She commented in the Facebook page, The FEZ Documentary Project, that she had a wonderful conversation with a musician. They talked all night exchanging stories. He is now very much part of this project.

What is beautiful about this project is that Roxanne is doing this from the heart. She has funded most of this project from out of her pocket. As of April 2013, seventy-five percent of the film was complete.

One of the dancers who will be performing for the fundraiser on July 14, 2013, Feiruz Aram actually interviewed Lou Shelaby in 1994 about the Fez. Lou told Aram during the interview that the main attraction was between the dancer and the drummer. He told Aram that he was very happy to be part of such wonderful moments.

Soon, the community will have an opportunity to see the story in its entirety. However, Roxanne needs our help in making it possible. You can either attend the function on July 14, 2013 or you can make a donation online. Either way, a little goes a long way.

Do take some time to see the Facebook page and look at the photos. There is an awesome photo of Jayne Mansfield and Peter Lawford, both stars who visited the Fez.
