Review - Silhouette Studio 5 Update
In this article we will discuss the new features and improvements for the Silhouette Studio 5 update.

The first thing you will notice in the Silhouette Studio 5 update is the new Home Screen, which opens when you start the program, instead of going straight to the workspace. On the Home Screen, you will find suggestions for popular tutorials, along with recent project files from your library. Under your library files are some possible project files from the Silhouette Design Store. Just double click on a picture to start a tutorial, open a project file in the workspace or go directly to the design store. To the right of the screen, are links to articles from their website. Besides being available when you start Silhouette Studio, you can open this Home Screen at any time by clicking the Home icon from the top toolbar.

The second new feature is the Starter Mode, for those users that are new to Silhouette Studio. When you toggle on the Starter Mode, the user interface changes to a simpler version of the original and the icons are enlarged. These changes make the interface easier to work.

Studio 5 also has some new panels. You will notice that the Registration panel is no longer part of the Page Setup panel. The Registration panel is now a panel of its own, which is called the Print and Cut panel. This is where you will turn on/off and adjust the settings for the Registration marks for printing projects.

Sending projects to your cutting machine has been simplified with the new Send Guide, which has been added to the Send panel. This guide will take you step-by-step through the settings needed for a cutting job. Of course, you still have the original Send panel as well, which allows you to cut by color or layer.

The new Speciality Tools panel is where you will control the settings for the speciality tools. These tools include the Emboss/Deboss, Score and Emboss, Power Engraver, Heat Pen, Leather Punch, Leather Carver, and Send to Silhouette 3D.

My favorite change is to the panel icons list on the right of the interface. In the previous version of the software, there were more icons than could be listed and some of the icons were hidden. My favorite icon, the Layers icon, was always hidden. It is now possible to open the list of icons in to two columns, making all the icons easily available.
