Profumo and Round Midnight Basils
Of the many fine basils that are available, Round Midnight and Profumo are two highly recommended ones for the home landscape.
Profumo Basil
Profumo basil is a dense, compact, mounded, vigorous plant. A Genovese type basil, it shows excellent disease resistance. This is highly suitable for ornamental purposes as well. It is perfect for pots and containers.
The oval, bright green leaves have a rich fragrance and a clove-like flavor.
Round Midnight Basil
Round Midnight basil is a hybrid plant with purple leaves. A little over a foot tall, the dense, rounded plant is a gorgeous ornamental.
The tender, glossy, purple foliage is ruffled and toothed. Extremely scented, the leaves have an aroma that blends nutmeg, allspice, and musk. The very showy blossoms are light purple.
Red Rubin Basil
Red Rubin basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an improved selection of Dark Opal basil. Unlike most purple or red basils, Red Rubin retains the beautiful color throughout the season. This variety originated in Denmark.
The strong, sturdy, vigorous plant is a large flat leaf basil type. The bushy, uniform plant is compact. It is one to two feet in height and slightly less than a foot wide.
The foliage is like that of the large leaf basil except in this case this happens to be a deep reddish-purple, purplish-bronze, garnet, or purple with a copper tinge.
Unlike some other purple basils, Red Rubin produces almost no green-leafed seedlings. This is a very popular variety that is perfect for ornamental use. It is suitable for pots and other containers as well as flower beds and borders.
The leaves are very sweetly scented and have a delicious spicy cinnamon-like flavor with a touch of anise and mint. Red Rubin basil is perfect for herbal vinegars and most other recipes.

The glossy, vivid green leaves can be harvested over an extended period beginning about a month from planting time. It can continue for most of the summer as this variety is very late flowering as the name indicates.
Summerlong basil is a very productive variety. Direct sow the seeds where they are to be grown for the plant dislikes being transplanted.
