Space Saving Veggie Varieties
Compact vegetable plants are a godsend for those with limited garden space. One brand of these is called the Kitchen Minis. These can be grown both indoors and outdoors.

They’re the perfect choice for patio tables, balconies, decks, window sills, and kitchen countertops. The Kitchen Mini plants are available at nurseries and garden centers.

As of August 2021, there are sixteen varieties of Kitchen Minis, which are sometimes described as tabletop veggies. Gardeners can choose from assorted Kitchen Mini tomatoes as well as various kinds of sweet and hot peppers.


Kitchen Mini Tomatoes

Siam Red tomato fruits are slightly larger than those of Cocoa tomato. The upright plant is only seven to nine inches tall and up to a foot wide. The small cherry tomatoes are ½ inch long and wide. This variety can be grown in a six to eight inch pot.

Cocoa tomato is a new Kitchen Mini tomato that will be available in 2022. This bears small round red fruits that are ½ inch long and an inch wide. The upright plant is only six to eight inches in height and wide.

Red Velvet tomato is a Kitchen Mini variety with very sweet tasting, small fruits. This plant can be grown in a four to six inch pot. It is perfect for a patio table or a kitchen window.

My favorite Kitchen Mini tomato is the Micro Tom tomato. The upright mounded cherry tomato plant is nine to twelve inches high and up to 1 ½ foot across. This plant is small enough for a three to four inch size pot. It bears small round sweet tasting cherry tomatoes, ½ to ¾ inch long.

Red Velvet tomato is a new Kitchen Mini tomato variety for 2022. The very small cherry tomato plant is only six to eight inches tall and wide. It bears small round red cherry tomatoes, ½ inch long and wide.


Kitchen Mini Peppers

When it comes to peppers, gardeners will find a wide selection of Kitchen Minis. Hot pepper lovers can choose from Kitchen Mini Tuquito, Tamale, Hot Burrito, and Cosmo hot peppers.

The Kitchen Mini brand also includes three sweet pepper varieties. These include Fresh Bite Red, Fresh Bite Orange, and Fresh Bite Yellow.

The Fresh Bite pepper varieties are just slightly taller than some of the other Kitchen Mini varieties, a foot to fourteen inches in height and ten inches wide.

Although its name implies that Hot Joker bears hot peppers, these are in fact sweet and very versatile. They can be eaten fresh. Once the peppers are dried, these can be ground for paprika or cut into pepper flakes. This can be grown in a four to six inch pot.

Hot Burrito and Cosmo hot peppers are two Kitchen Mini peppers that can be grown in six to eight inch pots. Tamale peppers are suitable for four to six inch pots.

Tamale peppers are red and have a mild, spicy flavor. Fajita pepper is a moderately hot Kitchen Mini pepper. The plant can be ten to twelve inches tall and wide. The red fruits are four inches long.

Cosmo pepper is a mild flavored hot pepper with a conical shape. This ripens to a lovely purple-red. The plants are ten to twelve inches high and ten inches wide.

Hot Lemon pepper is a habanero type pepper with a very hot taste. These ripen to yellow. They’re borne on twelve to fourteen inch tall plants. The peppers are an inch long and ½ inch wide.
