Caramel and Palace Purple coral bells are two very popular plant varieties. These are great choices for the home landscape.

Caramel Coral Bells

Caramel coral bells is a hybrid bred by Thierny Delabraye in France. This plant is a great choice for containers. The rabbit proof plant is extremely popular.

The strong, robust, vigorous variety is a dense plant. It forms a tidy, round mound or clump. The flowering stems are perfect for cut flowers.

Caramel coral bells is a good choice for butterfly gardens. It has a compact growth habit and is quite tolerant of heat and high humidity. This plant is ½ to 1½ feet in height with a 1 1/2 to two foot spread .

Suitable for full sun and part shade, it does well in zones four through nine. Caramel coral bells was among the most highly rated varieties during plant trials at the Mt. Cuba gardens.

This plant has large, rounded, golden caramel to creamy butterscotch or yellow-orange foliage The underside of the leaves are purple-red.

Flowering takes place in mid-summer. The cream colored blossoms open on two foot tall stems.

Palace Purple Coral Bells

Considered an exceptionally fine plant, Palace Purple coral bells is quite outstanding. This was discovered at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The origins of the plant are unclear.

Some experts believe it was a hybrid. This was the very first bronze leaved coral bell. It reaches 1 ½ to two feet in height.

The plant does best in zones four through eight. It is suited to part sun and part shade. It definitely benefits from having some afternoon shade.

This pretty much comes true from seed although there can be some very slight variations in the plants as the growing season progresses. Over time, some of the purple coloring tends to disappear.

The mounded plant was among the top six during the Mt. Cuba plant trials. It does quite well when grown in containers.

Palace Purple coral bell was named the 1991 Perennial Plant of the year by the Perennial Plant Association. It is eight inches to a foot in height with a spread of one to 1½ feet.

Forming a clump, Palace Purple coral bell makes an excellent ground cover. This is pretty much grown for the maple-like leaves. Very dramatic looking, these are bronze-purple to rich purple.

As the season progresses, this becomes lighter colored. Keep in mind that the leaf color can vary based on the location and the plant source. The arrival of Palace Purple coral bell led to a whole new world of leaf colors for the coral bells.

This plant blooms from May through July. The cream to greenish blossoms are borne in loose panicles. They feature showy red anthers.

Later, the showy pinkish-red seed heads begin to appear.
