SUVs and Gas Milage Efficiency
Right now SUVs are not classified as cars, so they are not held to the high standard that American autos are as far as an average miles per gallon (MPG) rating. Cars have to achieve an average MPG of 27.5mpg. In comparison, SUVs only need to reach a 20.7mpg. This is across all SUVs a given company produces, not for each single model.
Most SUVs have even worse milage than 20. Some standard brands are:
Cadillac Escalade - 12 city 16 highway
Dodge Durango - 13 city 17 highway
Ford Explorer - 15 city 20 highway
GMC Yukon - 14 city 18 highway
Isuzu Trooper - 15 city 19 highway
Jeep Grand Cherokee - 15 city 20 highway
Land Rover - 12 city 15 highway
Lincoln Navigator - 12 city 17 highway
Nissan Pathfinder - 15 city 19 highway
Nissan Xterra - 16 city 18 highway
Mitsubishi Montero - 13 city 18 highway
If you own a SUV, look into having a more fuel efficient car for your daily driving and only use the SUV for situations where its larger bulk is truly necessary. Not only could this save you thousands of dollars a year in gas dollars, but it will also help the environment!
