Why Become a Leader

Why Become a Leader
There are many reasons to become a Girl Scout leader. It is the most fun volunteers will have while having a positive effect on the lives of young people. Here are my favorite reasons for becoming a leader.

1. Be a positive role model for girls.
Good leaders will teach Girl Scouts life skills like manners, integrity, and perseverance while also having fun. Leaders play a major part in helping girls develop into strong, mature individuals.

2. Get quality time with your daughter.
Leaders will share many experiences in Girl Scouts alongside their daughters. Leaders and daughters will learn skills, complete projects, and go on adventures together. These will be experiences their daughters will always remember.

3. Go on adventures.
Not only will leaders go camping with their troop, but also there are many council sponsored events and service unit events that will be new and exciting for leaders and Girl Scouts. Leaders will explore these adventures with their troop and will build lasting memories.

4. Make new friends.
With over 3,000,000 Girl Scouts nationwide, 1,000,000 as adult members, leaders are sure to make new friends with both adults and girls in Girl Scouts.

5. Perform community service.
Leaders will work closely alongside their troops as Girl Scouts complete a variety of service projects both big and small. Leaders will have a chance to give back to the community as they lead Girl Scouts to do the same.

6. Help girls develop courage, confidence and character.
There is nothing more rewarding in Girl Scouts than being a part of a child’s development into a courageous, confident person who has good character. Young people need role models like troop leaders to help them develop into positive members of society.

7. Share favorite crafts.
Girl Scouts love to make crafts and learn new skills. Leaders will have many opportunities during meetings and service unit events to teach Girl Scouts about their favorite hobby or craft. It’s an opportunity for leaders to share their interests.

8. Enjoy new experiences.
Leaders and Girl Scouts will experience a wide range of activities from ice skating to marching in hometown parades. Local Girl Scout councils and service units plan fun, exciting events for Girl Scouts. Individual troops may also create their own experiences to meet their needs.

9. Fundraise with Girl Scout Cookies.
Leaders play a major role in the cookie sale by teaching Girl Scouts basic entrepreneur skills during the sale. Leaders facilitate the troop sale and help girls learn budgeting and other skills as they complete cookie sale badges.

10. Develop business connections.
As volunteers lead a troop, they will come in contact with a variety of business people. Leaders will meet the local firefighters when they plan a field trip to the firehouse. They will meet the mayor when the troop visits City Hall. These business contacts also help Girl Scouts develop an interest in a variety of careers.
