What's New Flash CS5.5 Video Series
This video series What's New in Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5 and ActionScript 3.0 Learn by Video with Kelly McCathran is an introduction to the new features in Flash Professional CS5.5. Because these new features are mainly for developing Flash content for mobile devices, the series begins with an overview of the increasing popularity of mobile devices and their projected importance in the future.

McCathran devotes one video for each new feature starting with the New Document and Document Settings dialog boxes. She covers the new Auto-Save and Scale Content with Stage options. She demonstrates how the new scaling feature can save many hours of development. She also points out the AIR for Android templates and discusses the Swipe Gallery template in depth, including how to customize the template with your own photos.

After an introduction of her personal preferences for the Flash workspace, she moves on to discuss how to use the new content scaling feature and the other new additions to the Publish Settings dialog box. Next, she discusses other time saving features such as the new copy/paste and duplicate layers options and the integration of Flash with InDesign and Photoshop.

Although the Flash Project option in the newly designed New Document dialog box is not new to CS5.5, McCathran covers how important this option is when sharing assets between multiple documents. She also covers several features for developing for mobile devices including the new Export as Bitmap, TLF features, IK and the Bone tool's new Pin to Stage feature.

McCathran discusses the new ActionScript features in CS5.5 including code snippets for tap events and how they compare to the familiar click events that we all use so often. She also covers the Accelerometer and the new SWC export option. Finally, she covers the basics for publishing your app for the Android and iOS marketplace.

Personally, I was hoping for more information on the Code Snippets for mobile devices, perhaps a short introduction and demonstration for each snippet. I also felt that the discussion of creating buttons in InDesign was slightly off topic. This series comes with project files, a small book attached to the outside of the box and a quiz section at the end of each video.

Kelly McCathran is an Adobe Certified Instructor in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and PageMaker. She teaches Adobe applications throughout the US and abroad. The Learn by Video series is a partnership project from video2brain, Peachpit Press and Adobe Press.
