Review – Voices of War

Review – Voices of War
Overview copied directly from the book’s back cover:
Voices of War is a verbal and visual mosaic of America’s military history told in the words of those who were there, from the doughboys of World War I to the mechanized warriors of Operation Desert Storm. Selected from among the more than 30,000 personal interviews, private memoirs, photographs, and letters amassed by the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, Voices of War presents scores of unforgettable eyewitness accounts – vivid vignettes of life in uniform and poignant tributes to fallen friends, battle scenes, and quiet moments behind the lines. Spanning five generations of veterans and the families who prayed for their safe return, this book is a moving chronicle of the courage and commitment of American men and women fighting for freedom all over the globe.

Praise
This book is well-organized and encompasses not only soldiers but support services and spouses. The pictures and drawings were wonderful, interspersed as they were between the stories. It’s not a book you need to begin at the beginning, so open the book and read a few pages at a time and come back to it time and again.

Purchasing Information
Tom Brokaw called the Veterans History Project a priceless collection of memories. The book lists $16.95 as its US selling price. One bookstore I favor lists its membership price for $15.25. I bought it at an overstock-store for three dollars. (I buy most of my books from over-stock stores. I use bibliotherapy with my two dozen adjudicated students, so I buy each one a book on a monthly basis -- the price is terrific for me.)

Conclusion
Many books have arisen from the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. Voices of War, introduced by Max Clelland with an afterword by Chuck Hagel is wonderful and well worth the read.
