Batik Quilts - Fons & Porter

Batik Quilts - Fons & Porter

Wow, I’ve reviewed a lot of books in my editing career, and this one is definitely one of my favourites. What a fabulous publication. Of course it’s part of the stable at Leisure Arts and Fons & Porter. These quilt books are of the finest quality both in the physical strength of the book spine and covers and the user friendly make up of the book.

I love Batik fabrics, (did I tell you I love Batik Fabrics?). I have a stash that is growing in my fabric cupboard, just waiting for THAT quilt pattern to come along. Well, I’ve found THAT pattern about 5 times in this one publication.

What I love about this publication, which is Edited by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter, is that every skill level is catered for, every technique that you can think of is catered for and every type of learning style, be it from drawings, photos or the written word is catered for.

Amongst the wonderful projects in this book (there’s 25 of them) including full sized quilts, bed toppers, Wallhangings and table runners. The techniques clearly explained and illustrated include Cutting Curved Pieces, Piecing Curves, Clamshell Units, Working with 60 degree diamonds, Using paintstiks on fabric, bobbin work, Piecing Double Weddle ring and Binding Uneven edges. That equates to about 15 different workshops!! And you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own sewing room!

I like that there is a chapter on just how Batik fabrics are created and this helps to understand the structure of the fabric and why it’s best for piecing and appliqué.

As always, the finish of the book is outstanding and the colours of the fabrics are as vibrant and exotic as if you were seeing them in the “flesh”.
I really like this book and I thoroughly recommend that it be a star resident on your quilting library shelf.
