Motion Preset Particle Emitters

Motion Preset Particle Emitters
In the previous tutorial, we started our study of a Motion particle system and learned the simple parts of that system, the Cell and Emitter. In this tutorial, we will take a look a some of the preset particle emitters in the Motion Library.

We will make a small MotionR project that contains several sample presets from the Library.

  1. Open a new Motion project.

  2. Name the Project layer to 'Motion Emitter Presets'.

  3. Go to the Library and click on the Particle Emitters category.

As you can see, we have several subcategory folders containing different types of emitters. Let's take a look at some emitters from each folder.

    All
    Abstract
    Fauna
    Nature
    Pyro
    SciFi
    Smoke
    Sparkles
    Urban

  4. Open the Abstract folder. These emitters range from ASCII Field which contains floating letters, number and symbols to the popular Bokeh animation.

  5. Rename the default Group layer to 'Samples'. We will place the first sample Abstract emitter into this group layer.

  6. With the Playhead at the beginning of the Timeline, select the ASCII Field emitter and click the Apply button to the right of the preview.

You will notice that the emitter is placed at the center of the Canvas and the default duration on the Timeline is 10 seconds. Also, we have a new sub group in the Samples group called ASCII Field.

Let's add a Bokeh sample to the Timeline. Lock the ASCII Field group layer.

  7. With the ASCII Field layer selected, click the Plus icon at the bottom of the Layers pane. Rename the new sub group layer 'Bokeh'.

  8. With the Playhead at the 10 seconds position on the Timeline, select the Bokeh emitter in the Library and drag it to the new group layer in the Layers pane.

We get the same results when we drag the emitter to the Layers pane or the Timeline list as when we used the Apply button in the Library. The emitter is placed on the Timeline list at the location of the Playhead and on the center of the Canvas.

Save your project for the next tutorial.
