Whiteboard Animation - Writing Text

Whiteboard Animation - Writing Text
In the previous MotionR tutorial, we created the motion path for the second scene of our whiteboard branding intro for Mygrafico. Now we will create the matching mask, using a duplicate of the Bezier path.

  1. The Color graphic layer should span the Timeline from 02:02 to the end of the Timeline.

  2. Duplicate the Bezier_Color path and drag the copy to just above the Color graphic layer.

  3. Turn off the visibility of the original Bezier_Color path.

  4. With the Bezier_Color copy layer selected, increase the width of the path until the Color graphic is hidden.

  5. Right-click on the Color graphic layer and add an Image Mask. Drag the Bezier_Color copy layer in to the Image Mask layer.

  6. With the Playhead at the 02:02 mark of the Timeline, select the Bezier_Color copy layer. In the Inspector move the Last Point Offset slider to zero. Add a Keyframe.

  7. Move the Playhead to the 04:00 mark of the Timeline and move the slider back to 100, which should automatically add a keyframe.

  8. The edge of the Bezier_Color copy layer should be at the 04:00 mark. Drag the Motion Path layer to the 04:00 mark.

Test and Save.

Now you can repeat the steps above for the Face and Text group.

  1. With the Playhead at 04:02 on the Timeline, select the Hand graphic layer and the Bezier tool. Starting again at the tip of the pencil, draw a path over the lion's face as if you were drawing the eyes, nose and mouth. Continue to draw the Bezier path so that the arm will move back to the pause position. Rename this layer to Bezier_Face and drag it under the Bezier_Color layer.

  2. Add a Motion Path to the Hand graphic layer. In the Inspector, set the Path Shape to Geometry, uncheck the Attach to Shape option and drag the Bezier_Face path to the Shape Source well.

  3. Shorten the Bezier_Face layer and its Motion Path to span from 04:02 to the 06:00 mark of the Timeline.

  4. Duplicate the Bezier_Face path and drag the copy to just above the Face graphic layer.

  5. Turn off the visibility of the original Bezier_Face path.

  6. With the Bezier_Face copy selected, increase the width of the path until the face details are hidden.

  7. Add an Image Mask to the Face graphic layer and drag the right edge to the 06:00 mark. Drag the Bezier_Face copy layer in to the new Image Mask layer.

  8. With the Playhead at the 04:02 mark, go to the Inspector and set the Last Point Offset slider to zero. Add a Keyframe.

  9. Move the Playhead to the 06:00 mark and move the Last Point Offset slider back to 100 for the second Keyframe.

Repeat the steps again for the Text group. When you draw the Bezier path over the company name text, draw over each letter as if your were writing it on the screen. Instead of ending the path at the pause position, put the last anchor point at the lower right corner of the text.

To remove the Hand graphic off of the screen, put the Playhead at the 08:02 mark. Select the Hand graphic layer. In the Inspector - add two Keyframes by clicking the icon to the right of the Opacity slider and again to the right of the Position controls. Move the Playhead to the 08:07 mark and drag the Hand off the screen. In the Inspector, set the Opacity slider to zero.

That finishes the whiteboard animation branding part of the intro. At this point, we will save a copy of the video in the native .motn format and leave the last 2 seconds of the Timeline empty so that it can be customized as needed for another project. For example, you might want to use this intro at the front of a longer advertising or demonstration video.

After saving a copy of the basic intro with the empty ending, we will continue to work on this video to complete scene 5 and the "Subscribe to our channel" call to action animation for the YouTube Channel trailer that will be seen by nonsubscriber. You can also add audio writing sounds or background music.

When finished with scene 5, save your work as a .motn file called "Call to Action Subscribe Trailer" and export as an .mov Quicktime file.
