Holiday Season Motion Graphics Storyboard

Holiday Season Motion Graphics Storyboard
In this tutorial, we will discuss a simple four-scene motion graphics intro in Apple MotionR, which could have several applications, such as the start of a marketing video or a seasonal welcome message from your company.

For marketing videos, the intro can be added to the start of a series of holiday or seasonal product videos. Michaels Stores and JoAnn Fabrics do this frequently. But used alone, this intro would also make a great welcome video for your YouTube channel trailer.

I got the inspiration for this tutorial while visiting the Martha Stewart YouTube channel. Let's take a closer look at the video How to Make a Coffee-Filter Tree - Martha Stewart. As you can see, the intro has a duration of five seconds and is slightly different for each video in the Countdown to Christmas 2013 series. The intro to the coffee filter tree craft video contains three short video clips and closes with the title Martha Stewart's Countdown to Christmas centered on the screen.

From Facebook Cover Photo to Intro Video

If you are like me, you don't have video clips of ponies in the snow or the budget to purchase stock video. So what can we use instead? For my budget, my go-to place for free still images is publicdomainpictures.net. In fact, I already had one photo picked out for this holiday season, which I used as a Christmas message on my social sites. I downloaded the image and added the holiday message in PhotoshopR. Then I changed the color of the profile image to match. I like the technique of changing the graphics on my social sites several times over the year. Switching social header images and changing the colors in the logo profile image is a nice way to keep your social site fresh. Because the large sized image is 1920 x 1275 pixels, it was easy to crop it as needed for my Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other pages.

When I decided to make this video, using that same photo and holiday message from my YouTube channel art in my channel trailer was a natural next step. I thought it would be nice to have the channel trailer carry on the winter theme. So, I picked two more images with the same winter theme and the next step was the storyboard.

Storyboard

As you can see from the storyboard, the first scene begins with a light snow fall animation and an image of winter berries. We will use Motion's Defocus filter, beginning with the berries slightly out of focus and coming into focus over several frames. For Scene 2, we will use the Grow/Shrink behavior to slightly move in on the two squirrels. In Scene 3, we will begin at the top of the trees and move downward to reveal the xmas decorations at the foot of the trees. The last scene reveals the holiday message as the text fades in and we add an Eye Strike sparkling star.
