2D Animation in Motion - Illustrator Graphics

2D Animation in Motion - Illustrator Graphics
In this tutorial, we will learn how to prepare IllustratorR vectors for a simple pumpkin pie bumper intro.

This bumper intro that we will create in Motion 5R will have three parts. In the first part, we will have a pumpkin pie enter the screen from the bottom, using a simple Motion path. In the second part, we will add the whipped cream to the pie. This animation will start with the small dots of whipped cream added around the edge of the pie one at a time and end with the larger circle of whipped cream added to the center. The third section will have a few caramel apples slide on to the screen.

The Graphics
We will use vector artwork created in Illustrator and saved as a .psd file, which can then be imported into Motion while maintaining the layers. We will need the pumpkin pie on one layer and each of the dots of whipped cream on separate layers. We will draw the background layer for the animation screen in Motion.

I had originally drawn these vectors for a flat lay hero header and purposely created these layers so that my client can change the color, position and scale of each vector. As you can see in our Illustrator file, all the objects are already on their separate layers but each layer contains individual smaller parts of an object. We won't be working with these smaller parts. So we can simplify the file a little be grouping some of these pieces together. Let's make a copy of the original document and make a few adjustments to the vectors, in preparation of exporting from Illustrator as a PhotoshopR .psd file.

The Pie Object
The pumpkin pie is setting in a silver pie plate. We will be animating the pie and the pie plate as one object, so lets group all the layers for the pie and plate into one group.

  1. Select all the layers for the pie and plate.
  2. With everything still selected, click Object - Group.
You should now have all the pie and pan layers combined in to a group under the Pumpkin Pie layer and the original pan group is empty. In the next tutorial, we will finish preparing our vectors for our motion graphics video bumper in Motion.
