Wix Cloud Based Website Builder

Wix Cloud Based Website Builder
Wix.com, a cloud based website builder, has been around for about a decade. Now that Wix is well established, let's take a look at what you can do with it. Wix has both paid and free accounts, with more features for the paid or Premium accounts.

Wix vs Wordpress

The Wix website builder is like Wordpress in some ways. As it is cloud based, you can use it as a content management system. Also, like Wordpress, Wix comes with free templates to get you started and the Wix App Market for your choice of free and paid plugins to add more features to your site.

One nice plus is the drag and drop website editor. Some of the Wix reviews that I have read state that the editor is difficult to use. I didn't find this to be true. However, because it is a browser based editor the response time is slow. For example, to change the size of an object, you would drag the corner handles. If you have used Photoshop, you are familiar with these handles. However, it does take a few seconds for the browser to send the information to the backend. If you release those handles too quickly, the change isn't registered. So just slow down a little and you will learn to love the editor as much as I do.

When it comes to mobile and responsive templates, I find my Wordpress site switches beautifully between devices, without any help from me. Of course, that may vary depending on which Wordpress theme you are using. I used the Virtue theme from Kadence.com.

In comparison, the Wix editor has both a desktop and mobile layout view. This gives you more control over the page layout for each view. I found that the mobile view needed a little manual adjusting to display as nicely as the desktop view. It wasn't automatically perfect, as with my Wordpress theme.

Another nice feature of Wordpress is the ability to easily switch between themes. This isn't as easy with the Wix templates. If you wish to switch to another template, it does take a little more work. But I do like that you can have several websites on one account.
