Holiday Time and Holiday Cheer Ornamental Peppers
These two varieties of ornamental peppers have been around for quite a few years and both are still available.
Holiday Cheer was first named an All America Selections winner in 1979 when it was selected as a flower winner that year. The very productive plant is a wonderful choice as an indoor plant. In addition, this is highly recommended for growing in containers on decks, patios, and entryways.
Holiday Cheer is a mid season variety that begins bearing very beautiful showy fruits about 85 days from transplant. The round peppers, an inch across, are pretty hot but edible. These are initially cream colored, changing to yellow, and finally ripening to red.
Holiday Time ornamental pepper was chosen as an All America Selections winner in 1980. It was named a national flower winner.
The plant is suitable for containers. It is only ½ to one foot in height. This variety was bred in Honduras. It bears deep green leaves and lovely white blossoms.
Considered a mid season variety, Holiday Time ornamental pepper begins bearing about seventy to eighty days from transplant. These are borne in clusters held upright on the plant.
The round, tapered fruits basically resemble very showy marbles. With a moderately thick flesh, these are initially white, changing first to yellow and then orange, finally ripening to a bright red. The small peppers are around ½ inch long and wide. These can be hot.
Numex Easter Ornamental Pepper
Numex Easter ornamental pepper was chosen as an All America Selections winner in 2014. It originated at the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University. The very high yielding plant is very compact.
The very uniform, well branched, adaptable plants make a good house plant. In addition, these can be grown in containers outdoors. This is also a great addition to flower beds and mixed borders.
This tolerant variety can withstand humidity, heat, rain, and drought. With dark green leaves, it only grows to a height of six inches or so. This is an early season variety that begins yielding chile type fruits in large clusters of four to six fruits.
The fruits emerge on the tips of the stems. The conical peppers come in a rainbow mix of colors, all of which can be present at one time. They’re reminiscent of Easter eggs with shades of lavender, purple, yellow, orange, pastel orange, and red.
