Kurume and Plume Celosias
Kurume and Plume celosias are outstanding annuals that perform beautifully in the garden and landscape.
Kurume Mix Celosia
Seeds of Kurume Mix celosia are available from Twilley. Select Seeds lists seeds of Kurume Corona. This series with crested type blossoms was bred in Japan as a cut flower.
The tall, sturdy plants are vigorous and disease free. These are tolerant of drought and heat. Kurume celosias reach two to four feet in height with a spread of about a foot.
This is grown in fields as a commercial cut flower. The two to four inch wide crested blooms are six to eight inches in length. The large, globe-like combs come in extremely vivid shades.
The colors include rose, gold, orange-red, orange, and a mix. The newest color in the series is the Scarlet. Each plant bears lots of stems that can be cut as cut or dried flowers.
Plume Celosias
Seeds of this series are available from Johnny’s, Sow True, and Eden Brothers. The series features plume like flowers in a variety of soft colors.
These much branched plants are two to four feet tall, and are quite free flowering. They will bear lots of plumes with ten to fourteen stems per plant.
Plume celosias are ideally suited to hot, dry situations and thrive in full sun. Flowering typically begins about nine to twelve weeks from the time the seeds are sown.
These beautiful plumes make a wonderful cut and dried flower. The soft, feather blooms are about six inches long. The series features various flower colors, including golden and scarlet. In addition, the Pampas Plume is quite popular, and features a mix of various colored plumes that can be copper, crimson, bronze, scarlet, or red. Johnny’s lists seeds of Pampas Plume, while Eden Brothers has seeds of mixed pampas, golden plume, and scarlet plume. Sow True also sells Pampas Plume seeds.
Red Flame Celosia
This is a crested type celosia. Seeds of Red Flame celosia are available from Jung and Johnny’s.
Red Flame celosia makes a wonderful cut and dried flower. The blossoms retain their brilliant colors.
The plants reach two feet to 32 inches in height. The strong, thick stems are a beautiful burgundy. In addition, the leaves display the same beautiful color, which continues throughout the growing season.
Red Flame celosias begin flowering around 95 to a hundred days from the time the seeds are sown. The large, deep red blossoms are up to four inches wide.
