The Grapes Of Wrath
Times are hard in Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. When the Joad family is forced off their land, they decide to stay together and go to California where work is supposed to be abundant. Once there, the family must struggle to stay together while trying to make a new life for themselves. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Grapes of Wrath”.
· Muley is telling Tom and Preacher Jim about the day they showed up on his land to tear down his home. In the flashback, after he’s threatened “Joe Davis’ boy”, the driver of the dozer, the man proceeds to tear down the house. In the overhead view, Muley has lowered his rifle. In the next front view, Muley has the gun raised to his shoulder, still aiming it at the driver.
· The family is packing up the truck in the middle of the night. The close-up of Tom on the truck, when he asks his dad how he got the money, shows Uncle John in the background coming out the door and down the steps carrying a bed frame. The scene cuts to a close-up of Pa and Uncle John is walking out the door and down the steps again with the bed frame.
· The family is trying to convince Grandpa to get in the truck to California. Grandpa insists he’s not going and, in the close-up view, comments he’s twice the man Muley is. Grandpa’s hands are in front of his shirt and they’re empty. It cuts to a wider view, when he says, “And I ain’t listening…”, and Grandpa is holding his jacket in his hands.
· The family crosses into California and the men are shown in the river. The far view shows four men in the water. It cuts to a closer view and there are still four men. As Pa and Uncle John join them, there are now five men in the water.
“The Grapes of Wrath” (1940) stars Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine, Charley Grapewin, Dorris Bowdon, Russell Simpson, O.Z. Whitehead, Zeffie Tilbury, Frank Sully and Frank Darien. It runs 129 minutes and is rated “Passed”.
