Gardeners with perennial beds and mixed borders will find this is a great source for many kinds of perennials. For 2022, they have added lots of new varieties. The catalog has an amazing number of daylily varieties.
I especially like Tropical Isle peony, which needs no staking. It is a mid-summer blooming peony with very complex looking, scented blossom. The outer petals are soft pink, while the rest of the lovely blooms are whitish-yellow. The plant is medium height.
Mary Jo Legare peony is a md-season, double flowered peony. The ball-like flowers are a very dark pink. Once the flowers emerge, the outer petals fade, while the rest of the flower remains pink. The plant is medium height.
Ada Niva peony has scented, pollen-free blossoms. Flowering early, these blooms are held on strong stems. The relatively short plant does best in zones 3 through 7. Except for the hint of gold along the edges of the petaloids, the flowers are dark burgundy.
When it comes to specialty irises, this catalog can’t be beat. It has many of these varieties. For 2022, they’re added three new Siberian iris.
Kiss the Girl iris is an award winning variety that blooms from late spring into early summer. Suited to zones 3 through 9, the plant stands over 2 feet tall with a spread of 1 to 1 ½ feet.
The sweetly scented two toned yellow blossoms are just beautiful.
I especially like Paprikash Siberian iris, recommended for zones 3 through 9. It can be slightly over 1 ½ feet in height with a spread of 1 to 1 ½ feet.
Flowering is from late spring into early summer. The rich multi-toned scented blossoms are a lovely mix of cream with yellow and soft cinnamon highlighted with violet veining.
The catalog has two new coral bells for those shady spot in the garden. These deer resistant plants do best in zones 4 through 9. Southern Comfort coral bells features creamy white blossoms. The very large foliage opens a cinnamon-peach and then turns a burnished copper. For autumn, this will provide amber fall color.
Midnight Rose coral bells is a vigorous plant. The leaves emerge as hot pink with spots. Later in the season, the spots enlarge to become splashes of white.
Astilbes are also lovely shade perennials, and the catalog has a new variety for 2022. Color Flash astilbe is recommended for zones 4 through 9. This is resistant to rabbits and deer.
The 1 ½ foot tall plants are just as wide. Flowering is from mid to late summer. The pink blossoms make a great dried flower.
The new foliage is vivid green and later becomes purple burgundy. For autumn, it becomes a mix of orange, bronze, and red.
The catalog also has several other beautiful shade perennials. Hillside Black Beauty black snakeroot is one of them. There is also Miss Piggy Heartleaf pigsqueak or bergenia, which is resistant to deer and rabbits.
The Gilbert H. Wild and Son catalog lists many kinds of hostas. Albopicta hosta is tall, nearly 2 feet with a spread of over 4 feet. The leaves are just massive. The leaf margins are streaked.
Although this company is widely known for its perennials, in fact the catalog has some kinds of shrubs as well. New ones for 2022 include three new hydrangeas and a dwarf Korean lilac. My favorite of their shrubs is the red twig dogwood, which provides much needed color during the winter months.
