The 2022 Gurney’s catalog is available. It features many new varieties.

The Born Free black raspberry is the very first thornless raspberry. Hardy to zone 5, this bramble begins bearing in mid-June or so. The sturdy, vigorous plant is vase-like. The lush fruits are dark purple. Born Free black raspberry is 4 to 7 feet in height with a matching spread.

Lola Martin fig is a new fig that is hardy to zone 6 (-5 degrees F.). The great tasting figs are perfect as a fresh fruit. These are also perfect for jam as well. They ripen early in the season.

Triumph apple is a wonderful new scab resistant apple tree. Gurney’s sells this in various sizes, including as a Reachables tree, meaning no ladder is ever needed. Triumph apple is hardy to zone 4 and was released by the University of Minnesota. The plant is a cross of Liberty apple with Honeycrisp apple. The firm fruits have a delicious flavor with the perfect mix of tartness and sweetness. The apples store amazingly well—for six months. These are ready to harvest in late September.

New landscape plants for 2022 include Forever and Ever Pink shrub rose, dragon’s blood stonecrop, Coral Mammoth perennial mums, Blue vine clematis, and three new Itoh peonies. Little bluestem is also new.

There is also a wonderful new variegated canna called Phasion.
Gurney’s has also added seeds of a new zinnia, Queeny Lime Red.

Gardeners will also find new gardening supplies, aids, and the like for 2022, including grow lights and a mini greenhouse.

Daisy gourds is a new variety for 2022. These colorful fruits are 2 to 3 inches long and feature a mix of pleasing colors for fall decorations. This is called Daisy gourd because the stem ends of the fruits have a daisy-like pattern on the rind.

Delicata Honeyboat squash is a new winter squash that requires no curing. These have a delicious sweet flavor. The skin is adorned with green stripes and yellow patches. These are ready in 90 to 100 days.

Tivoli hybrid spaghetti squash is a new space saving variety. The squash is 8 to 10 inches long and up to 4 pounds. This has a nutty sweet flavor and is ready in around a hundred days.

Flame Star hybrid cauliflower is a beautiful orange cauliflower. It is very rich in nutrients compared to the standard white ones. The heads are 7 inches wide and are ready in 70 to 80 days.

Romanesco broccoli bears a crop in 75 to 100 days. This is an heirloom from Italy. The dense green heads look slightly different than standard broccoli. These have a nutty, mild flavor.

Blush Butter Cos lettuce does well in both fall and spring. The crop is ready in 50 to 60 days. This lettuce is a cross of butterhead lettuce and romaine. The leaves are crinkled with pink along the edges. .

Surbor kale is ready in 55 to 75 days. For the best flavor, allow the crop to be exposed to cool fall weather, which also deepens the purple color of the ruffled leaves. The plant is high yielding.

Ginger is a new root crop for Gurney’s. It is hardy to zone 8 and higher and is a tender annual elsewhere. The roots can be harvested in the baby stage or later when they’re larger.

Sugar Magnolia snap pea bears in 70 days. The vigorous, sturdy plants are 6 to 7 feet in height. These pods can be harvested when young or when the peas are mature.

Pea-Licious shell peas are ready to harvest in 68 to 72 days. No trellis is needed for the plants. The compact, self supporting plants are very productive. The tender sweet peas are borne in ultra long pods. These peas are very slow to get starchy, unlike most other peas do.
