Some Outstanding Anemones

Some Outstanding Anemones
September Charm anemone and Max Vogel anemone are outstanding varieties. These are highly recommended for the landscape.

September Charm Chinese Anemone

September Charm Chinese anemone is a branching perennial. Like most of the fall anemones, this is recommended for zones 4 through 8. It was introduced by Bristol Nurseries in Connecticut. The plant is said to possibly be a cultivar of Anemone hupensis.

This perennial has long been a garden favorite. It is two to three feet in height.

This is one of the earliest blooming fall anemones. The deep green leaves are deeply divided. The undersides of the foliage is hairy.

The uniformly large, single blooms resemble shallow cups. They contain five rounded petals. These are rose pink or pinkish-silver with two of the petals being darker, rounded, and smaller.

The centers of the flowers are a paler pink, possibly with some hints of yellow. As the blossoms age, the centers tend to fade slightly. The outer portions of the petals are a darker pink.

The Pretty Lady Anemone Series

These plants are hybrids that were introduced in 2011 by Blooms of Bressingham in England. The anemones are best suited to zones five through nine. Flowering is from late summer into early fall.

The series includes several varieties, including the following.

Pretty Lady Diana anemone features lovely single, dark pink flowers. The plant is 16 to 18 inches tall.

Pretty Lady Julia anemone bears beautiful semi-double, bicolored blossoms that are pink and pale pink. The flower stems can grow to be over 2 ½ feet tall.

Pretty Lady Emily anemone is slightly over 1 ½ feet to two feet in height and a spread of 1 ½ feet. These begin blooming in September and continue into October.

The flower stems can contain up to four blossoms. With ruffled petals, these are rich deep pink with very showy green centers packed with colorful yellow stamen

Pretty Lady Susan anemone bears the largest blooms of all in the series. This very free flowering plant can be almost two feet tall. The beautiful flowers are rich pink.

Max Vogel Japanese Anemone

Max Vogel anemone is a hybrid. It is recommended for zones five through eight. The deep green leaves form a mound. The vigorous plant has wiry stems.

This plant is especially floriferous. Flowering takes place in August and September.

It bears masses of flowers that are generally two to three feet in height. However, they can be slightly taller.

The graceful, semi double to double blooms are especially large, four to five inches across. They’re soft light pink to pinkish-mauve with frilly orange centers. Some of the outer petals are generally darker colored. As the blooms age, they usually become lighter in color.
