The Birch Hybrid Serbian Bell Flower

Birch hybrid Serbian bell flower is a compact, vigorous hybrid that is only six inches or so in height. It is recommended for crevices, walls, and at the front of borders. The plant was named for Birch Farm Nursery in England where it was bred by Walter Ingerson.

The plant was introduced in 2013. This does best in full sun. Over 1½ feet wide, this evergreen has prostrate stems.

The plant forms a neat clump. A classic variety, it spreads by underground runners.

This features bright green ivy-like to heart-shaped leaves. The basal foliage is rounded and toothed, and ½ inch in length.

This floriferous plant begins flowering in June and continues for most of the summer. The nodding, bell to cup-like flowers are borne in racemes and face upwards. These are blue-purple to dark violet.

Clip Series of Carpathian Harebells

These plants are unbothered by deer or rabbits. There are several varieties in this series. They include Blue Clip, Deep Blue Clip, Light Blue Clip, and White Clip. These plants are considered a real improvement over the species. They’re suited to zones three through nine. The foliage is deep green.

These blossoms make great cut flowers. All of the Clip series requires a moist, very well drained soil. They will grow well enough in full sun. However, they really prefer to have some shade in the afternoon during the hottest part of the day.

The neat looking, compact, mounded plants are recommended for edging, beds, borders, and containers. They are also perfect for rock gardens. These are typically six inches to perhaps a foot in height with a spread of a foot.

Flowering takes place from June through August. The blossoms are two to three inches wide.
Blue Clips Carpathian harebell has medium blue to violet-blue blossoms. The plants are just covered with blooms. Blue Clip and White Clip are particularly reliable varieties.

White Clip Carpathian harebell is an attractive, compact plant. It resembles Blue Clip except for the flower color. The plant is six inches to a foot tall. It does best in zones three through eight.

White Clip is recommended for borders, edging, rock gardens, containers. It is an excellent compact plant, and resembles Blue Clip except for the flower color.

This plant is six inches to a foot in height. The pure white blooms face upwards. These are held well above the foliage. Flowering takes place from late spring through the summer if the plant is dead headed.

Blue Waterfall peach leaved bellflower is also highly recommended. It does well in zones four through seven. The very vigorous plants are ten inches or so in height.

This variety blooms from June until fall This plant is recommended for walls, rock gardens, containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, and stone walls.

Blue Waterfall peach leaved bellflower has lovely cool blue to blue-lavender, bell-like blooms. These arise from the center of the plant.

Joan Elliott clustered bellflower does well in zones three through eight. It reaches 1½ feet in height with a slightly smaller spread. This variety is recommended for borders and rock gardens. The flowers have a very long vase life.

The very free flowering plant has lots of flower stems. These bear large, bell-like blooms. Assuming the plant is deadheaded as needed, it will continue blooming throughout the summer.

The large flowers can be blue-violet, or dark blue-violet.
