The following varieties of wand flowers are great choices for the home landscape.

The Ballerina Series of Wand Flowers

The Ballerina series of wand flowers were introduced by Darwin Perennials. The series includes ones with white, blush, and rose colored blossoms. They were released in 2013.

These plants do well in zones five through nine. They prefer full sun. The cimpact, well branched plants reach one to 1½ feet in height with a spread of 1½ feet.

The Ballerina series plants thrive when spaced about a foot to 1 ½ feet apart.

Ballerina Blush wand flower blossoms have a gentle fragrance. The flowers are borne on slender stems. The plant is very free flowering with lots of flowering sprays.

Wand Flower Siskiyou Pink

This plant was introduced in 1995 by the Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery in Medford, Oregon.

Siskiyou Pink wand flower is suited to zones five through nine. Generally, it does well in full sun to part shade. This plant is also known as apple blossom grass.

The plant is a good choice for hot sunny spots. They can also withstand high humidity. This is a pollinator plant.

The stems of Siskiyou Pink wand flower make a great cut flower. The plant is up to 2½ feet in height with a spread of two to three feet.

Very free flowering, this tall, upright plant is also suitable for rock gardens. It features willow-like foliage. The stems, petioles, and buds are all red.

The leave are also reddish. Flowering takes place from May through September.

Borne in clusters on spikes, the flower are intense rose-pink to bright reddish-pink with white stamens. The flower color is a welcome change from the usual white wand flower.


Max Frei Geranium

Max Frei geranium is a compact, mounding plant that is only six to nine inches tall. However, it has a spread of 1½ feet.

Suited to zones three through eight, Max Frei geranium does best with a spacing of about one to 1½ feet between plants.

The lacy foliage brings lovely bright red fall color. Max Frei geranium also bears deep purple to bright carmine rose blossoms. The plant is very free flowering with the blooms appearing from late spring into the fall.


Tips on Growing Hardy Geraniums

These plants do well in full sun to part shade. The deer proof plants attract pollinators. This is an excellent choice for hot dry places. The plants also make great ground covers.

Generally, the hardy geraniums are lush, mounded plants. They’re generally compact with lacy foliage.

Initially flowering begins in late spring. They can have several reblooming periods throughout the season.
