The Pow Wow Purple Coneflowers

The Pow Wow Purple Coneflowers
The Pow Wow series of purple coneflowers are award winning varieties. These perennials are grown from seeds.

These varieties represented breakthroughs for the native purple coneflower. First, these bear many more blossoms than other seed grown purple coneflowers. They also begin blooming much more quickly than other seed-grown purple coneflowers. In the case of the Pow Wows, this means they bloom the very first year.

Bred by Darwin Perennials and introduced by Pan American Seed, these were named All America Selections winners. These plants are ignored by deer.

Recommended for zones three through nine, they are naturally dwarf. The plants are slightly over 1½ feet in height to two feet with a spread of a foot to 1½ feet. A spacing of fifteen inches or so between plants works well.
The Pow Wows are great choices for pollinator gardens. Easy to grow from seed, these plants also have another advantage gardeners will appreciate. They require minimal routine care. In the case of the Pow Wow series, this means no dead heading is called for. The Pow Wow plants are drought resistant and do best in full sun.

These robust, dense plants remain tidy looking all season long. The Pow Wow purple coneflowers were among the top five favorite varieties chosen by visitors to the All American Trial Gardens. This would have been in 2010 or so because the plants were announced as All American Selections winners in 2011.

The Pow Wow purple oneflowers begin flowering in May and continue through August. The flowers are three to four inches wide. Very showy, these non-fading blooms are sweetly scented.

Pow Wow Berry Purple Coneflower

The Pow Wow series include a white flowered one as well as Wild Berry. The blooms of Wild Berry purple coneflower has red rose flowers three to four inches wide. It was a 2010 All America Selections winner. During the trials, this was also named a winner by the University of Georgia Gardens . This is a stocky, relatively short, well branched plant.

The bold colored blooms are rose-purple to purple or dark purple-pink with a deep rose shade near the center. The cones are orange-brown. These are non-fading flowers. The plant is very free flowering, having many flower stalks.

Pow Wow White Purple Cone Flower
