Read Across America 2018
Check to see if your child’s school has a program for Read Across America Day. If they don’t, you could plan an event, even if it is just going into a few classrooms and being a special reader for the kids. Schools that already have plans can usually use volunteers to help implement the plans. Call the school and ask what you can do.
Likewise, other venues have programs to celebrate the written word. Libraries have Read Across America programs, and they can use volunteers, too. If one library has enough volunteers, call another library. Find a place where you are needed and fill that helper niche. Book stores may also be able to use help promoting their Read Across America programs. Churches and children’s hospitals may also have programs that can use volunteers. Get involved!
Plan a family or neighborhood Read Across America Day to celebrate reading. Have people bring their favorite books to share with friends and family. Discuss the books. Let people bring books that they no longer want and have a book exchange. If local laws allow it, make a table in the yard or at the end of the driveway to give away books on March 2. Have a “read in” with simple refreshments. Participants can bring a book that they want to read and a snack to share.
What you plan and what you do are only limited by your imagination and resources. Where can you find resources for Read Across America Day? Pull your favorite search engine up on your computer. Type in “read across america” resources, then hit the search feature. You will find dozens of free resources to explore. Some are elaborate, yet others are simple. It depends on what you want to do.
Don’t let Read Across America end on March 2! Encourage people to find books that interest them. Tell them about BookBub, where you can get free e-books. Find sources in your community for free or reduced price books. Get a library card and use it a lot! Find a way to stretch this important day, and Read Across America every day of the year.
