Lifeline Farm: A Biodynamic Montana Dairy
Lifeline Farm is certified organic and biodynamic. The organic certification is becoming more and more commonplace within the agricultural industry, but few operations successfully strive to become certified biodynamic. And what exactly does that mean? For the most part, it means that the cycle of life is fully embraced on the operation. Feed for the animals is grown on site in an organic manner and the animal byproducts are used for fertilizing these crops. Nothing is wasted. No synthetic chemicals are added. And the best part of all -- true biodynamic farmers truly believe in following the celestial signs of planting and harvesting. I don't fully get it, but I'm fascinated and hope to learn more, perhaps incorporating this into ideas at our own Hanging HX Ranch in eastern Montana. (Right after I raise my kids, remodel the house, and retrain my husband in biodynamic thought.)
Anyway, check out Lifeline Farm and get yourself some of their products to try. If you are in Western Montana, the list of retailers carrying their goods is on the website. If out of the area, you may have some luck in getting them to ship their dairy products. Keep in mind that this farm is also locally owned and has withstood the test of time, starting originally as a produce only farm in 1978. It is one of those products that will leave you with a good feeling when you have made a purchase.
The last time I consumed Lifeline Farm cheese was several years ago and it is one of those experiences that sticks with you always, giving you hunger pangs at 10:00 at night as you write. I can not speak as to the beef and pork products, but given that they are grown in such a natural, stress-free setting, I can only imagine that they would have divine flavor and tenderness. Please make the effort to check out Lifeline Farm's website and learn more about biodynamic agriculture -- the rewards for the environment and your taste buds are worth the effort!
