Taking a second look at the book, I find that there are many items, that are very useful, in this book. Near the front of the book there’s a baby laying on a white serface, with parts of it’s body marked off. These are called the Critical Measurements. And, yes, the places marked are very significant in creating a wearable object to find your baby. The next pages covers how to create a gauge and the advantages of making a gauge swatch to find the correct hook size that will work for you. Although this may seem like a very tedious tast, it’s really not. It’s just a matter of what you become used to and then continuing to use this gauge rule for any wearables.
This book not only gives an introduction to stitches, it also gives an introduction to the MASTER STITCH KEY whi teaches the beginning of learning to crochet by graphs. A lot of doily patterns are written in graphics. This is very beneficial, especially to anybody will follow the course of crochet. This will practically double the patterns you’ll be able to utilize, rather than just following a written pattern.
As, per the title, this book covers a lot of baby items; such as starting out with a basic motif and then building from there. Stitches taught include intermediate level stitches. While some patterns will have a written pattern, this is only a guideline or you may prefer to use the graphs along with the diagram for fitted wear to increase, decrease, tapering and bind-off.
The graphs are very clear and the written patterns are very easy to understand. Several patterns are labeled as ADVANCED skill level, but I don’t see them to be any more difficult than an intermediate. The only thing that really pushes the skill level up there is where a zipper might be installed or such as that.
Many of these patterns, are just plain fun to work with; such as little tykes leg warmers, colorful vest, a soft ball to toss around and a rocket appliqué. Don’t be surprised if your little one points to a page and says, “Make me one of them” or “I want some of those on mine”.
I think this is a great book for any level to start with and stay with while learning new stitches.
