Excellent Website for Educators

Excellent Website for Educators
This site has been reviewed and was listed as one of the websites of the month by a previous editor of this site in 2008. So I decided that I had better check out the website myself to find out if the site was still in existence and whether I agreed with the previous assessment. Well I was very impressed. This is an excellent site for educators and has some information that is useful for students as well. Kathy started this website in 1995 and then entered a partnership with a company known today as Discovery Education. She updates the information on the site daily making it easy for educators to find the most current resources available to them on the web. She is definitely what I would call an expert, beginning her career with a degree in education more than 30 years ago, and then continuing her education by earning an MLS. She has gained experience to this day putting that knowledge to work and has gained much more knowledge while working at various educational levels and positions including her present position as Director of Technology for Nauset Public Schools in Orleans, MA.

This site offers much information that is useful for teachers of all subjects and all grade levels. For example here are a few of the subjects for which a teacher can find numerous resources:

Art and Architecture
Health PE and Fitness
History and Social Studies
Literature and Language Arts
News Sources/Magazines
Weather

There are actually 22 different broad subject areas to search and when you click on one of those links you are taken to a list of resources about that subject. Each of those resources has a comment by Kathy about the site, often about how it might be useful to an educator. She has even marked some of the sites in each subject with a Schrock Guide Award if she feels it has exceptional content.

Also included on this site are direct links to various search tools such as Advanced Google Search, Bing, Advanced Twitter Search, and Creative Commons search. A list of resources to aid teachers is given under “Teacher Helpers”. From here you can purchase her books or other books she recommends for teachers, check out bulletin board ideas, slide shows for teachers, evaluation tools, assessments and rubrics, read articles she has written and more. You can learn about Kathy easily since her information is readily available including her interest in the use of technology to support teaching, the awards she has earned, her resume, and how to contact her.

One wonderful area of the site gives Kathy’s suggestion of a new website every week of the school year for teachers on which they can learn about some new technology that they may be able to utilize in their lessons. Many of these sites will be useful for distance learning and online teachers. For those who don’t have the time to search the web for all these resources which change constantly but can be most helpful to know about, this website is fantastic. I found that I spent a few hours just exploring the site’s links. I can’t wait to go back and explore some of the areas in much greater depth. Not everything tells one exactly what to do in particular situations but rather provides enough information for you to be creative and make use of it in the best way for you and your classroom. I therefore recommend that you go and check out the site and bookmark the sections that will be most useful to you.
