Affordable, Overwater Honeymoon Resorts

Affordable, Overwater Honeymoon Resorts
What could be more romantic than sleeping in your very own bungalow, perched above gentle ocean waves in a tropical destination? These types of accommodations abound in French Polynesia, but there are also some locations closer to home that won't cost an arm and a leg. Here are two resorts with rooms on stilts that you might consider:

Punta Caracol
Nine private cabins line a mile-long coral reefed coast of Isla Colon in the Central American country of Panama. From each two-room, thatched-roof hut, guests have access to the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea beneath them. It's not unusual to see dolpins swim by, and the number of exotic, tropical fish are mind boggling!

Each suite has a king-size bed in the upper, master room. Decor is simple, but colorful and classy. Water is heated via solar panels installed in the roof--only one nod to the environment that is typical at this ecologically friendly resort.

Many active tours depart from Punta Caracol, including canoe trips, rainforest hikes, snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving and more.

Punta Caracol's website (linked below) has a lengthy FAQ section detailing how to get to this island off the northeast coast of Panama.

9 Beaches
This hotel calls itself Bermuda's only "ultra casual" resort, with a dress code that only mandates flip flops. Eighty-four cabanas make up the accommodations, with a handful of them directly situated over the Atlantic Ocean.

The most prized spots are on "Paradise Pier," which feature glass-bottomed viewing panels for checking out all the tropical fish swimming underfoot! Other soft-sided (heavy-duty canvas) cabanas are set on the sand or seaside rocks, built up into the cliffs, or on a pretty, grassy bluff.

Just a two-hour flight from many East Coast cities, Bermuda is an ultra-accessible getaway. It's tropical, but not too far away from home (relatively speaking when comparing it to a Fiji or Tahiti location).

9 Beaches, so named for its nine beaches that dot its property, accommodates destination weddings. But note that the resort also markets itself as a family-friendly vacation destination. So, if you want to fully remove yourselves from being around young children, this may not be the place for you.
