Yocahu Premium Coffee

Yocahu Premium Coffee
I am sure you’ve heard, mostly from me, that I am all about the coffee. So it’s no surprise that I receive many coffee-related gifts. World traveler William Doyle, honorary family member and friend, brought me such a gift straight from Puerto Rico--Yocahu Premium Coffee.

Beautiful Packaging

The package for Yocahu is striking. It gives you a clear view of the vacuum-packed beans inside with a picture of the red coffee cherries incorporated with the red, white and blue Puerto Rican flag on the outside. You get the feeling that you are in for a yummy snack--and you are.

Coffee of Kings and Popes

Coffee grown in Puerto Rico is known as the "coffee of Kings and Popes" from as far back as 1850. According to the label on Yocahu, “Coffee grown here has been consumed by the Vatican State and by some of the most important European cities.” Whether this is fact or myth, the possibility remains.

The Flavor

If you were drawn in by the stories, you will stay for the taste. One of the things I notice about Puerto Rican coffees is that they are mild, not bold, but make no mistake--they are also rich and flavorful. A nice smoothness that goes great, for me anyway, with evaporated milk.

More Good News

Yocahu is also organic. The Organic Trade Association says in order for coffee to be labeled organic it must meet the USDA standards which include, “…farming without synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for three years and a sustainable crop rotation plan to prevent erosion, the depletion of soil nutrients, and control for pests.” For more about organics, see “Organic Coffee” on this site.

Buy Yocahu

If you don’t plan to visit Puerto Rico any time soon, Yocahu Premium Coffee can be purchased online on their website that also offers a host of handcrafted items and apparel as well as interesting facts about Yocahu.
