How to Find Free Books from Kindle

How to Find Free Books from Kindle
If you have a computer you can read thousands (really) of Kindle books for free. You can download a free app from Amazon that sends Kindle ebooks to your laptop, desktop computer, smartphone or iPod Touch. Of course, you can also read free ebooks through Kindle on your actual Kindle device. :)

The point here is that you don't have to buy a Kindle to read Kindle books. I use my iPhone for all my ebook reading. I have downloaded enough free books on my phone to last me several years right now, and new free books are uploaded all the time.

A great place to start with free books is in the Fiction section of Amazon.com. If you enter Kindle Popular Classics, you will see a large list of books presented for free download. There are many classics that have been rendered for the public via volunteers, and this is a great time to brush up on them.

Downloadable classics include Frankenstein, Dracula, Little Women, the Jane Austin novels, The Count of Monte Cristo, Sherlock Holmes, the stories of Mark Twain, A Tale of Two Cities, War and Peace, Moby Dick, the writings of Plato, War of the Worlds, HG Well's Time Machine, Journey to the Center of the World, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, Great Expectations, The Odyssey, Walden, Crime and Punishment, Tales of Edgar Allen Poe, the Velveteen Rabbit, Grimm's Fairy Tales and The Secret Garden, among many others. My reading list is pretty full, and this is just a start of the freebies you can find.

There are also a ton of new fiction books by little known authors who give their books/novellas away free (or for a dollar) on Kindle, so you are not limited to the books in the public domain. Many people end up surprised to find hot, fresh new authors this way. Enter Limited Time Offers in the category for the Kindle Store.

Besides fiction, there are countless other categories of free books for download on Amazon -

  • Cookbooks
  • Historical books and documents
  • Self help books
  • Frugal living books
  • Survival manuals
  • How-To books of all sorts
  • Poetry books
  • Anthologies
  • Children's books
  • Religious books
  • Limited Time Only Promotional books
  • Autobiographies
  • Pre-1923 out of copyright books/diaries/letter collections

You will have to look carefully at the listings, since there is often a free version available for many books that are also listed as having a non-free price. Sometimes it takes a bit of extra browsing to find exactly what you are looking for. I find the hunt itself to be a worthwhile pastime. :)

There are even ebooks on finding free ebook titles, and Amazon's Listmania section offers lists on free ebooks. Here is a link to a how to ebook on finding a Amazon's free books - How to Get Millions of Free Kindle Books and Other Free Content With or Without an Amazon Kindle.

Millions of Free eBooks

More free books (literally, millions of titles!) can be sent to your book reader from archive.org, openlibrary.org, manybooks.net and guttenburg.org. Head to these sites and click the Kindle options to have them sent to your reader/app of choice. For me, again, that is my iPhone, although I know many people who say they love their Kindle device so much they'd marry it. :)
