Tatting

January 11 2019 Tatting Newsletter

Can a website freeze? Well, I guess in winter anything is possible. This is the Dec. 23, 2018 newsletter in case you missed it.

Cartier-Bresson Frivolite

The Antique Pattern Library is a marvelous resource for vintage publications for many needlework arts and crafts including tatting! Recently a new book was posted which is entirely in French. But do not fear, there is a list of tatting terms right here handy.

And there is a detailed encyclopedia on tatting prepared by the famous Edwige Renaudin.

This new book has 66 petite size pages. And it is a very attractive cover showing several needle arts. But, curiously, there is no tatting on the cover, not even a tatting shuttle!

The tatting instructions are for my favorite "slip n slide" method. The tatter never loses contact with the shuttle while the thread passes smoothly between fingers and shuttle.

Here are two samples of the patterns included:

Points to consider when beginning to tat this pattern are the four center rings which join to each other necessitating the initial picot be big enough to accommodate 3 joins.

This pattern is a real jewel. It has so many possibilities. I would recommend substituting a line of real split rings instead of the two lines of old-fashioned rings with the bare thread traveling along behind the rings. Split rings would be perfect for the 6-ring flowers, too. They would allow tatting to be carried forward without cutting the thread. And consider the two rings on the lower edge of alternating rings and chains. The picot which joins them together might be much shorter to create a definite point on the edging.
