Philippe de Montebello, the Met's museum director for 30 years has announced his retirement at the end of 2008 or when his successor is found.
Many accomplishments can be attributed to Montebello over the years. Most recently, in 2006, a four year completion of cleaning and restoration of the museum's landmark Beaux-Arts facade took place. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the facade is sheathed in Indiana limestone. The central block of the entrance is arched, with a series of paired columns and ten-foot-tall caryatids. These represent the 4 areas of art: painting, sculpture, architecture and music.
Something that I have found to be fascinating and educational is the "Time Line of Art History" which can be found on the museum website.
Acquisitions such as: Duccio's "Madonna and Child" and van Gogh's "Wheat Field with Cypresses" are just a few of the many paintings that contribute to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's reputation as 'world class'.
So many more notable achievements can be attributed to Philippe de Montebello as Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. On a personal note, I wish him well and I thank him for all the wonderment that I have discovered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art over the years due to his leadership.
