The start of the new year is traditionally accompanied by the making of resolutions. Making resolutions mostly results in setting ourselves up for failure, so I don't make them. With one exception. I try each New Year's day to imagine myself tatting every day. Of course, that doesn't happen always, but luckily for me, tatting remains both a big part of my professional life and my personal passion. I do plan ahead for tatting projects as I am involved in an annual tatting scholarship fundraiser for the Palmetto Tatters Guild Tat Days.
I also try to plan ahead for the Online Tatting Class which I teach weekly. I strive to find vintage patterns in the public domain and share them with tatters around the world. With the help of class volunteers, the patterns are rewritten using modern tatting techniques such a climbing out with a mock picot and split ring or split chain. Diagrams are created, new models tatted and notes are shared about the order of progression and any pitfalls of which the tatter should beware. For example, remember those old pattern that told us to wind the shuttle then cut it free from the ball. The very next direction was to tie the tails together! Say what?? That simply created two more tails to be hidden and...tatters hate to hide ends. So by not cutting free the ball or by using two shuttles, our tatting is more efficiently created.
Today I am reviewing the list of Valentine's Day hearts to tat. It is barely one month to the big day and I want to be prepared. Sending a little tatted heart in the mail can really bring a lot of cheer to friends and family. Then I need to check into shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. And next something special to celebrate International Tatting Day on April 1. Oh! But have I missed Mardi Gras? And Chinese New Year! Oh goodness, there is Easter eggs and bunnies and tatted kites for flying in March winds. Oh my, is Mother's day next? And June brides follow shortly, too.
Whew, I am all worn out just from planning ahead. I better get a rest this afternoon so I can get started on my new year's tatting.
