Medication Myths and ADD

Greetings from the Land of OZ!

Years ago, I read a book called You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!: The Classic Self-Help Book for Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder. I bought it because it is about ADD and the title was catchy. Although I have primarily inattentive ADD, and the book has more of a hyperactive ADD focus, it helped me see that some problems that I had were a result of my ADD. My chronic problems with meeting school deadlines were not just laziness, something that I had been told in overt and subtle ways for my whole life. Once I could remove the value judgement from these difficulties, it made them easier to deal with in a pragmatic manner.

A lot has changed since Attention Deficit Disorder was considered a moral failing and lack of effort. Research has shown that it is a biological difference/disorder, and that medication and other therapies can improve the negative symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Information about ADD medication is still full of myths.
